What is 'too much'? One person's 'too much' might be one hour a day - another's might be five hours a day. You have to be led by your child - and, to a certain extent, yourself. We all know that we have days where we ourselves need to allow children to have the T.V. more than others - and yes, we might feel guilty about it - but it doesn't make us bad parents. It is better to have a parent who is less stressed than a parent who is stressed and not really engaging in quality time with their child. However, that does not mean that I think it is a good idea to let a child vegetate in front of the T.V.. I allow my little boy to choose three programmes a day. He then acts as though it is a treat and a privilege - and it becomes a good tool to encourage good behaviour. He is at risk of losing this privilege if he misbehaves. We shouldn't demonise TV though. I think it is a fantastic learning tool - even when children are very little. It encourages children to learn about narratives - think about the skills it might take for a small child to follow the story line of an advert - and these skills can be exploited by parents - in reading stories etc. to their children. They learn about beginnings- middles - endings. It's great! The thing about TV is that it's the way that we as parents think about it and use it - if your kid watches a lot of TV - then watch it with them and talk about it. If you feel guilty about letting your kids watch telly while you get dinner on or tidy up - then don't!

It's clear from the wording in your question that this is a subject close to your heart "too much"!

I would say so - I have a 6-year old boy and a 2 year old girl, neither of whom sit watching TV all day long - my son goes to school full-time, and is allowed to watch a couple of his favourite progs when he gets in from school, while his tea is being made - my daughter watches a couple of kiddies programmes on occasion, but she and her mum tend to be out and about socialising all day, every day, interacting with a wide range of other people and children of all ages- she is now a very outgoing, confident little girl who will always initiate a "conversation" with new people (she's only 2, so isn't especially fluent just yet), with much enthusiasm & gusto. My boy was the same at that age, and now mixes very well with both old friends and new acquaitences.

We always do something "outdoors" over the weekend, whether that's taking the horses out for a hack, or me and the boy going fishing or building "camps" in the fields.

There's always something more beneficial to be doing than just watching the telly day-in, day-out. Children should be encouraged to appreciate the wider environment from an early age.

I guess that we're lucky, living in the lovely English countryside instead of a grim inner-city housing estate- there's always somewhere we can go!

Too much of anything is bad.

Television is a tool It's HOW you use it that matters. It's not a baby sitter, but it can be stimulating and useful in various ways. I always try to watch with my son and talk about the programme that way you can be sure of the content and reinforce the educational aspects. There is also a place for entertainment and much is learned through fiction. Dramas can allow children to explore ideas and emotions in a 'safe' way. with older children it can open up the conversation on more sensitive topics like sex or drugs. Of course this does take time on the parents part but children need time. If you haven't time to watch with them its often better to steer them into other activies. I'm personally very doubtful about TV for the under 3s and we also have the rule that if the TV is on we sit down and watch it There is a danger that it can become a background noise which the children just stop noticing. This makes it more likely that they won't be ready to listen and concentrate in other situations too.

Watching television per se is not bad for children. Some of the people I know who have incredible general knowledge or specialised interests are avid television watchers. However it is really important that children learn other skills too. Communication and conversation for example (screaming insults at the ref on tv doesn't count). Also time to be creative/reflective/inventive. Which means downtime when they are bored enough to find out something interesting to do by themselves. These are all vital life skills. In our house we have a no screens (ie tv and computers) rule between 10 & 5 during the day during school holidays. (and none of my teenagers are up before 10!). Also I don't like it when they try to entertain their friends by just sitting watching the tv. However I do think you can get too strict - everyone has a right to enjoy a little leisure time when they can do whatever they like (...within reason!)

There are alot of tutorial television programming.... My youngsters watch some, perhaps more beneficial then some would enable, yet they actually have busy lives, they want down time too. They play out doorways alot, continually in the pool, get solid grades, and do their chores, So i see no longer some thing incorrect with some hours of television an afternoon, My youngsters watch more beneficial television in the course of the summer then in the course of the school 3 hundred and sixty 5 days because they basically dont have time.... My youngsters are 15 and six, and ar enthusiastic about lots of activities. Why no longer enable a newborn be a newborn !!! Saturday is continually their day to chosen what to do, in the adventure that they chosen to observe television ok, yet lots of the time they basically look ahead to slightly. they are outside through the pool atleast 4 hours an afternoon, and driving motorcycles for yet another 2 atleast. They both have television's of their rooms, my son activates MTV at the same time as he cleans his room thats oftentimes they in trouble-free terms time his is on, till he had important surgical operation and couldnt flow for 3 weeks, then he watched alot, now he's ill of television . My 6 year previous daughter watches it very little or no. They perfer the livingroom. from time to time in case you dont make a huge deal of it neither will they. i imagine its a crock for a mom and father no longer to enable the newborn watch television yet they sit down on the computer 0.5 the day..... If the newborn doesnt want to observe newborn shows, why do the mummy and father want to be on a pc? on the church issue..... no longer all mom and father chosen to take their children, it is type of their decision to make. in case you interfer too a lot the daughter in regulation will resent you and could limit you from the children im particular that isnt what you want....

I think that 20mins of tv 3 times a day is enough for a small child with the exception of a dvd once a week as a treat/ Young children need to develop and learnt new things and so putting them infront of the tv all the time wont achieve that. Kids need fresh air and varied activities such as painting, drawing, baking and playing in the park and with friends. Visits to the farm and the pond to feed the ducks are all great activities. In the summer picnics also go down well and are good for all the family.

Watching too much television by themselves is not good. But depending on the age of the child they sometimes only have a short attention span anyway.

If you watch tv with your child and enjoy their programs with them then they learn what sort of things are good for them and not. When my son was small the highlight of our day was watching Sesame Street and joining in with everything they would do. Chlldren often will take themselves away from the set to do something else, they are not as stupid as some like to make out. But I have seen some parents shouting at their kids to watch tv and not bother them, we are the carers and we need to look out for them this is when the problems start.

Given constructive information and access to other things to do I dont believe the majority of children are spending too much time becoming couch potatoes.
2007-02-18 14:32:29 UTC
Between the ages of 6 and 11, I probably watched 4 hours of TV a day. I honestly learned a lot from it, because we didnt have cable, and I watched educational stuff. Children under the age of 4 should have limited TV time, and it should only be educational and healthy stuff. But honestly, I think I turned out all right. I was always 2 or 3 grades ahead in my studies, and with only a highschool education, my IQ is that of a PhD graduate. Not trying to brag, just trying to prove that couch potato kids can turn out ok, lol.

Watching TV is not the best because at younger ages kids or teen don't know what is good for them to watch and sadly the bad things has more attraction that good ones.

Excess of every thing is bad. there are different aspect of development of personality like Mental, physical and life skills. The third one has the most important. the this comes partly from the earlier two. Watching too much TV and not much of physical activity and interaction with others is not good for learning life skills the most important.

Hope this will answer your question

It depends on what context they watch it in.

I myself watched perhaps 2 hours a day as a kid and that was about enough. As a teenager I watched about 4-5 hours most days and in retrospect that was too much TV. Now I watch around one hour per week (because so few shows are worth watching these days).

Anyway what I think is that a kid should watch TV together with his/her parents. If the parent wants to fob the kid off with TV because they don't want to spend time with the kid then this is bad parenting. The TV is no substitute for spending time with parents but can be an entertaining thing for a family to enjoy together.

Being alone with a TV for hours at a time is bad for kids because it limits their contact with their family and will stop them developing interactive skills with real people. If kids watch a show with their parents and discuss it afterwards then they will learn from it and enjoy the show more.

Also by watching TV with the kids then you know they are watching suitable shows and not shows with bad language and gun fights.

Anyway that is what I think about TV and kids.

"Too much television can negatively affect early brain development. This is especially true at younger ages, when learning to talk and play with others is so important. "

"Until more research is done about the effects of TV on very young children, the AmericanAcademy of Pediatrics (AAP) does not recommend television for children age 2 or younger."

"children older than 2 should watch no more than 1 to 2 hours a day of quality programming."

"But despite its advantages, too much television can be detrimental:

Research has shown that children who consistently spend more than 4 hours per day watching TV are more likely to be overweight.

Kids who view violent events, such as a kidnapping or murder, are also more likely to believe that the world is scary and that something bad will happen to them.

Research also indicates that TV consistently reinforces gender-role and racial stereotypes. "

"Can TV scare or traumatize kids?

Yes. Children can come to view the world as a mean and scary place when they take violence and other disturbing themes on TV to be accurate in real life. "

I think it depends on the type of shows.

I'm not a parent, but I have several nieces and nephews, so I have opportunities to see both sides.

Certainly, I don't think a child should be left alone to channel surf and watch whatever catches their eye. But some TV shows are geared toward education. I have a preschool aged niece that watches a lot of Sesame Street type stuff and The Discovery Channel, constantly I am astounded by how much information she has stock piled in her tiny head.

Again I'm not a parent, I have no PhD, I only know what I see.

I like your belief, I work in a Nursery class (pre-school age) and I find that some children find it difficult to concentrate which could be caused by watching too much television. On the other hand other factors need to be taken into account.

Although some children use computers a lot as well.

I do not think it is right for a young child to have a television in their bedroom. I believe that it is better that children have an allocated slot to watch television and find other activities to do. When I was a child my brother and I used to play games and have fun with things we found around our house. I strongly feel that imaginative play is very important. Some parents or carers feel that in today's society children need to be protected from bad influences so allowing their child or children to watch television is a safe activity. Although some parents do not have much money to provide entertainment for their children.

I have younger siblings who are in their mid to late teens, who do a wide range of activites outside of school and they do not watch television. One of my siblings said recently he does not mind not watching television.

I hope the articles are of use for reference.

Children need to live in the real world and television isnt that. We had no TV for 6 years while the kids were small and instead played with them and took them on walks or they played together in the garden.

When I was small TV was only on at certain parts of the day and we were not bored. If you want sociable kids they must learn to interact, when it is their turn to speak in a conversation, wether their words are understandable ,how to actually play with others.

When they are older it is still important for them to be in the real world. Its too easy to wish you had what the TV families have or to see TV lives as exciting and adventurous while their own seem mundane.

Yes i do i believe it effects creativity and memory children need to interact with others and use there imagination in games to develop. TV in the main is one way and is propagandist and has a hypnotic effect i should know i was addicted as a child and even now my short term memory is weak . And a lot of programmes are now amoral like certain reality shows would not want my children watching them but some parents let there's exposing them to all sorts of behaviour and language . I think we should limit exposure or buy DVDS of suitable shows and encourage play and of course reading .

I think that the answer is in your question, that is 'too much'.

Some TV is fine, there are many very educational programmes on TV. The too much comes in when a person puts the child in front of the TV so that they don't have to spend their time with the child, going for walks, playing and communicating. If the TV becomes a parent you do have to worry.
2007-02-18 15:11:29 UTC
Yes I do. children should be more active and read books more than TV. Some Programmes can be educational such as Blue Peter, but too many cartoons are a waste of time. I also don't believe in children having their own TV in the bedroom. I know we have a watershed at 9, but thats a usual time for children to go to bed, and you can't control what they watch in their bedroom.

I don't think its the amount thats the problem if its not on all the time, its what they watch.

If they're watching something they're not really interested in 'because theres nothing else on', theres a problem! They need to learn where the off switch is and discriminate between what they really want to watch and whats just on.

As long as they have other interests and mates I don't see tv as a problem.

I taught my lad the difference between news, documentary, cartoons and play acting when he was little and was amazed at how good he was at telling the difference, even when he was tiny and watching Sesame Street.

They can learn to use their own judgement if they're given the chance.

In the sense of not doing other things like general socialising inc being a bit naughty yes.

Problem is anything good to do cost money or needs transport or may not be availaible.

ie if you live near a beach fine, once you have a surfboard.

But in a city tv is better then hanging out on gang run streets.

Also helps to get fit and confident say learning a electic guitar that can help get girls later in life, martial arts, dancing etc.

And later to put it bluntly...

Having a girl/boy friend is a lot better then porn simply as you cant cuddle porn or feel close or interact etc.

Ie needs people time, real people time as well as TV.

But not simply reading or hanging on streetsd... Needs to be something quality

Personally i think it's very bad for children, along with game consoles, including PSP, Game Boys and so on. I wouldn't let any child of mine stay on the computer for long periods of time either, although i do have one particular friend whose five year old son is constantly watching TV, Playing on his PSP and playing games on the internet. I'm not saying that children should be banned from these things at home, but i do think that some boundaries should be placed. I personally believe that these pseudo-reality games or whatever the hell they're called slow children down, as i've tried to explain to my friend whose son takes 5 minutes understanding what it is she's said to him - and he's mentally capable of understanding everything, it's just his activities at home which makes him seem mentally ill. I think children should have a few set days doing whatever it is they like to do and the rest doing what their parents would prefer them to do - including homework and household chores. A bit of discipline never hurt anyone. They should preferably be out riding their bikes and building tree houses during their play time!!

Watching too much television is never good. A good hour or two a day, maybe three if watching a movie is good enough. Besides, if there is something important coming up, you could just get Tivo, the best program ever, and just record things you would want to see. Playing memory games is extremely helpful and beneficial for their upcoming years at school. It increases their intelligence and memory capacity. If only my parents kept me off the television. Good luck!

Too much of anything is not a good thing. I personally believe that the TV is not a good thing in general and children should be limited in both time and content. As parents we have the responsibilty for what our children experience and I believe there is too much vicarious experience is to be had through the medium of television.
2007-02-18 15:24:09 UTC
It's commonly known that too much TV is bad for anyone. Children need to be active and need to get fresh air and interaction with other children to aid in their development. As with anything, it is okay in moderation. You are right in allowing a set amount of time to watch the TV. To dis-allow it would mean your children are sure to insist on it more. Cartoons and educational programmes are good as they are fun and exciting to children and stimulate their brains and teach them new things without them even realising it.

Yes most def, esp children who are sitting infront of the telly all day. they dont grow up to fully develop not knwing wht is true or make belive,I think one of the reasons y parents feel tht its ok for their children to watch telly is obviously boredom and they also find tht childrens safety cos as the world is these days kids cant play safely outside either, so wht do the parents do?? simple give them more time play with them, take them to toy libraries, play gym, basically there is so much one can do with the children, surely having an early active life will benefit them when they become adults,

We 'gave up' television 6 months ago. Our lives have been transformed. Now, our (5 and 8 year old) children play together all the time, they don't have continual requests for things they see in ads, they don't constantly ask to watch television, their attention spans have increased 100 fold, they respond to questions, they don't rush their homework 'out of the way' and their brains aren't sucked out by a bright box in the corner. The kids willingly admit they don't miss it. It was win-win.
2007-02-19 00:15:16 UTC
Allowing children to watch too much TV can have a detrimental effect upon their development when it comes to social interaction with other children. Under 5s should only ever watch TV with mother or father present and together.

As a teenager I used to watch tv all the time and I am not violent, stupid or defected in any other way. Now I don't even have tv and don't miss it, so I would say watching too much tv is just a phase in kids life, they will eventually grow out of it.

Yes yes yes! I am sure that is the reason why we have failed our younger generation. We have ALL allowed the TV to be the child minder, It keeps them quiet, sit them in front of a TV, watch their eyes glaze over, their jaws drop. Then wonder at what their actual interpretation is to things they see on that screen, think of the adverts, what do they understand as real and what is not? No wonder our kids do not know how to socialise these days. The stereotypical idiot parents, teachers displayed on TV, no wonder the kids begin to hate their authoritative figures.

Attitudes displayed on TV, are accepted as the norm.

I know this is somewhat of a generalisation, but I think its so, in the vast majority of cases.
2007-02-18 15:19:43 UTC
No i don't as long as its not for hours and hours on end. It's important to break watching tv up with something else, just like going for a walk or having a kick about in the park. I would say spending too long on a computer would be a lot worse.

Yes too much tv is bad for everyone, but especially children. children should be active and use their imagination, tv makes imagination redundant while viewing. Children who watch too much tv get less exercise than they need, and less social interaction. There is also the tendency to eat junk food rather than healthy food if it is available while watching. What is too much is a bit more difficult to define.
2007-02-19 12:00:27 UTC

yes - a child needs to be active n sitting in front of a tv does not help. however, on the other side, there are some programmes on which can help a childs development so i would not say that watching some tv is bad for a child

it depends on what they are viewing. if it is of a high caliber and of good sound educational value then it cannot be that harmful.

however, 'too much' of anything is a bad thing, but where do you draw the line.....

It depends on the child, what they are watching, and what the parent/gaurdian feels is too much.

Personally a couple of hours a day should be plenty. After all they need sleep, food, hygiene, socialisation, exercise and other activities to be fit and healthy individuals.
2007-02-19 05:24:08 UTC
TV is no substitute for a parent playing with the child and for the children to be outside playing with their friends. TV or the computer cannot teach young ones how to react with others. One of the reasons we have such a horrible lot of young people today

I think it is but with anything there are advantages and disadvantages. Advantage being, if children watch the correct programs they can learn alot from them, if they watch the wrong kind of programs then the opposite will happen, their attitude could be affected, they could pick up 'naughty' words, become lazy and ignorant, TV does more bad than it does good....

Watching television as a whole isn´t bad, watching too much is.

Television in todays society has become a technical child minder, easy to plop them in front of it whilst doing your own thing.

Children in todays society watch too much tv and play too many computer games. It is clearly evident that they have become to reliant on these forms of amusment when you watch them play outdoors. They seem to lack the inventiveness that we had at their ages.

Whilst i don´t condemn T.V watching, i think it should be in moderation and not as a keep you quiet appliance.

no and yes!

my son watches tv for 3 hrs a day as i work from home for this amount but he still goes to nursery(he is 2 1/2).

but as he is watching the telly he is leaning lots of things that i wish i could teach him,

suppose if you are letting the children watch telly for limited time and programmes for their age group then there is no problem.

its just a shame that many parents leave their kids in front of the telly all day as they either do not know what to do with them or they are lazy!!

There no such thing as too much TV,only too much bad TV.Children will actually get bored of watching TV after about 15 minutes and do something else.If they are not watching it switch it off.Make sure they watch good quality TV like Cebbies(?)

Cartoons are Very,Very bad

I think television is bad, as we are limited on as to how much educational information we can actually take in, in a sustaining way. It also teaches bad habits and behaviour, as there seems to be no regulation on moral content. Surely such a powerful medium, should have a greater sence of responsibility to the public

watching telly is definitely bad for you look at the results of continual barraging people with advertising, fat kid, lazy parents, ineffectual police force , you may say to yourself whats he on , but just think what the police force used to be like, effective and respected. Constant programs on about police in a negative light and political interference has eroded any real chance they have of being anything other than a pale reflection of what they used to be . look at profits that are fleeced from poor by supermarkets, again again advertising ,how many young wives or husbands can site down to a meal they have cooked themselves. We have lost the art of cooking, to many ready meals in microwave communicating by conversation simply because we don't interact or learn our kids to do so. Round the table at meal times was how we learned in infancy, so make your own mind up.
2007-02-19 09:25:24 UTC
It's not only bad for children but adults as well and it could impair the eyesight. A good tip for kids watching is to turn down the brightness a little and lower the colour, and that should save their eyesight.
2007-02-19 05:24:09 UTC
Yes, it is not healthy for children to watch too much TV. I mean, don't let them watch horror or action movies, they will copy it and then terrible things may occur. Just let them watch documentaries at National Geographic or Discovery, but skip the war and animal things, you know, especially when it's about their rituals, if you know what I mean. Really, they do make you smarter!

Watching tele can be educational for children. There are so many programs specially for children where they learn about animals ohhh lots of things. I wish we had tele when my kids were small. You have to limit their time of watching but i think they learn a lot more than playing games. There is a time and a place for everything most of things i learn about animals i have learned on tv.

In addition to other comments I consider it counter productive that the majority of children's drama programmes depict the lower end of society and it's obsession with low grade entertainment and sport. Hardly a good set of priorities when success at school and early maturity make for a stable and rewarding adulthood.
2007-02-18 15:38:43 UTC
I'd say it depends on what TV they watch. Programmes like David Attenborough's Life on Earth have had a lasting affect on my life. OK sat there veg'ing out on Big Brother is just a waste of heartbeats, but there is a fair amount of quality output still that is very educational.

Too much of anything is bad, but TV I would consider one of the lesser evils. Also it depends on what you consider too much. Common sense is the key-some kids enjoy tv more and learn from it(that's why we should moniter what they watch) If a child loves tv show him learning programs, and remember to encourage outdoor play as well.

It's more about television content. So much violence and I wouldn't say swear words, but words I would rather not expect to be on a kids programme.

They could watch "The Magic School Bus" all day and they gain heaps of knowledge. But Sonic The Hedgehog ????????

Parents need to control the television, radio, games, bikes, nerf, toys, books, newspaper, magazine, and video games they purchase for the children. The parents can request from the city times to broadcast under 18 television and radio. But most children watch television, parents need to turn the television to 'Barney','Inspector Gadget','Toon Disney','Sesame Street - preschool to grade 4', 'The muppets'...

NEVER never remove free education that can reach the mass population in pre-school, makes it easier for the children in grade school.

Active life, playing in the park and going to guided activities (I mean in a museum, in a zoo, in a sport center is better for them). But if they have to see tv, is good or bad for children depending on the programms you permit them to see.

If you control the programs choosing those that let them some knowledge at the end... It shall be better for them than those with sort of violence, inapropriate vocabulary, etc ...that at the end they shall copy...with the consequences anyone desire for their kids.
2007-02-19 03:16:51 UTC
I do not allow my 2 year old nephew to watch too much TV. He doesn't really care much for TV anyway, he gets bored. When he does watch we watch with him and supervise. I don't agree with sticking your child in front of the TV and leaving them there to watch TV to keep them quiet. My nephew picks up lots from the TV so its true they can pick up things. I like educational programmes anyway.......

Too much TV is bad for anyone

2007-02-18 22:42:14 UTC
Yes it is, children need interaction with objects, people, they need to talk with you respond to your questions, and all that. Tv does some of those but not enough, it makes you lazy you just watch, dream and your brain doesn't get so stimulated as if you do an exercise using your hands and all your senses.

Too Much TV is bad for everyone

But all families should at least watch the Simpsons together!
2007-02-18 15:36:26 UTC
Too much telly is deffo bad for kids. There concentration levels go down and they tend to eat more aswell. The same goes with to much time spent on computer games. They need to be kept as active as possible so that they stay active throughout their lives.

2007-02-18 14:27:08 UTC
Yes! My daughter's teachers have told me they can tell which children are active and are read to and which ones are parked in front of the TV or Game Boy all the time. Needless to say those kids who are "babysat" by the television don't do as well as those who get quality time with parents and who get out of the house and exercise.

2007-02-19 05:00:12 UTC
Good for you honey. Yes, I believe too many people use TV as the sole babysitter and educator rather than take their parental roles seriously.

And TV doesn't exactly teach good morals and socially acceptable behaviour does it?

But very happy to hear you're a good parent.

I have my kid here 7 mornings a week, and every other weekend.

My TV has not been swithced in in over three months. Her mother let's her watch it all night, as they sit there watching whatever crap is on.

Personaly I blame the TV for more than just being bad for kid's.
2007-02-19 02:40:45 UTC
i dont think television is bad for children, however there is certain extents and guidlines i feel as a parent you should follow..

it is fun for your child to watch there fav programmes, and this method of communication can be very rewarding and of an educational advantage for kids.

it should be limited i feel, as it can prevent other physical stimulation from taking place. it could cause children to become more lethargic, and not that physically motiviated, so i feel that it is in children's interests to wacth televsion on a limited scale to help further develope views, education and nurelogical develpoment.

It depends. Television educates, excites, stimulates and inspires the mind. But only if you watch intelligent articulate programmes. If you watch mainly ITV and reality programmes then your mind will not develop. However, watch BBC2 and documentaries, History channel, National Geographic Channel and the ilk and your mind can only blossom.

I think it depends what they watch, some tv programs are quite educational and help them to learn. But if they sit and watch junk all day the no it's not good for them.

My daughter is very active at 3 but she does watch children's telly, from the programmes she and I watch, She has learnt a little sign language "something special" and she knows a little Spanish "Dora The Explorer" I couldn't do these things at her age and she learnt them from the telly.

Television is good in a way that chirldren can learn from it the only draw back is television is mainly a one way thing. chirldren can not question a tv show.

i think your totally right television can teach children bad things it might sound sill to some but my daughter is only 12 months and if she watches the tweenies they are spitefull and naughty she picks up on it and acts like it too , even cartoons these days teach children bad habits my answer is only allow your children to watch what you think is suitable .
2014-10-01 11:57:49 UTC
kid and that was about enough.

Absolutely. Not only for children. How many of you out there could do without TV for a month? I bet you couldn't do it but I bet you'd feel a lot better for it.
2007-02-18 14:56:55 UTC
As with anything, too much is bad fot anyone! It's bad for their eyes as they focus on it and it does something to them (dont know exactly what, just know its not good!!!).

When kids watch tv they should watch a different varity of shows, as just watching one type of show might brainwash them into only believing their ideologies.

All TV programmes contain stereotypes too, which are not good for anyone!
2007-02-19 03:46:09 UTC
Definately. It encourages them ot watch tv and not go outside and do activitys. They could also draw or play games in side. They may also gain weight as they are not going around doing activitys.

yes i do think kids watching to much tv is bad for them.... thats why we have so many abese children in this day and age they dont go outside and play as much as they used to... but with society today with child snatchers and peodafiles...u can understand why parents dont allow there children out

i dont think it's "bad" for them... but i think they still need to get out and excersize and experience other things and try entertaining themselves with more then just sitting on the couch. try to get them into arts and crafts, games, etc. TV is okay, but not too much that they turn into a couch potatoe.. :) having hobbies and stuff like that will also increase their confidence and stuff. :)

It depends what you let them watch. My kids are 6 + 8 and love nature programs and programs like time team even cookery programs. If they are educational i think it's o.k. They never watch soaps or quiz shows or the likes. They do still like the kids t.v, but i don't let them watch lots of crap.

Too much eastenders with no etequette, manners, care or respect for the elderly,

Too much properganda about war, that america is the best at everything and are peacefull and think of others before them selves and liberate people without asking for anything in return

Too much adverts with fattey foods

Yes, try to engage kids in books for the following reasons: kids are illiterate when comes to reading books. Also libraries are a wealth of information in their books.+2 it will learn to speak the language they are accustomed to. And imagination will sore, with they are reading. T.V. is a cheap baby-sitter????

My old mother would always say. "Too much of a good thing is bad for you" in a way I think she was right, but I think it depends on your view.

What do you consider 'Too Much'?
2007-02-19 00:41:00 UTC
they will not develope correctly if all they watch is telly, get them interested in other things, outwith the house I mean, walks, taking a run in the car to somewhere interesting, a bit of culture rather than CBBC

2007-02-18 23:18:07 UTC
IT depends on your definition of 'too much'. 24 hours a day is certainly too much but 1 hour per day certainly isn't. How about 4 hours?
2007-02-19 01:59:43 UTC
yes other wise they'll just end up obese and braindead, give them loads of books and read with them, let them help when shopping, cooking etc lots of toys that help learning and chuck them in the garden and let them play with ants, worms and dig up dinosaur bones...(my son is convinced we have a t rex just waiting to be discovered by him in the garden)

It depends on what they are watching. Educational programs are good. Violent shows are bad.

in my view no because though it might effect them aint they get educated as well. some programmes show children how to talk. they educational programme for older children as well
